Carmen and Don Giovanni

Don Giovanni, written by Mozart, is a story of a young nobleman, Don Giovanni, after a life of conquests, meets defeat in three encounters. Follow the fate of Don Giovanni, as performed by the Opera ala Carte participants. First is the Donna Elvira, whom he has deserted but still follows him. The second is Donna Anna, who must postpone her marriage to Don Ottavio after meeting Don Giovanni. The third is with Zerilina, whom he vainly trying to lure from her fiancé, the peasant Masetto. All three vow vengeance on Don Giovanni and his servant Leporello. Elvira alone weakens in her resolution and attempts reconciliation in the hope that Giovanni will reform.

George Bizet’s Carmen, depicts the downfall of Don Jose, a corporal who is engaged to another by Carmen, a factory worker who ruins the lives of all those she encounters. Watch as the Opera ala Carte and Fine Arts Camp performers tell the tale of a group of gypsy smugglers who are frustrated in their attempts to bring their contraband into the city by Don Jose, an incorruptible officer in the Civil Guard. In order to help her kinsmen, the sultry Carmen seduces him, persuading him to abandon his post and look the other way. When his infatuation leads him to kill a fellow guardsman in order to prevent her arrest, he becomes a wanted fugitive. The capricious, fickle Carmen resents his possessiveness and leaves him for the famous toreador in Seville. Obsessed and frustrated, a distraught Don Jose follows her to the bullring with tragic consequences.

The Emperor’s New Clothes

Performed by the participants in our Fine Arts Camp II program, The Emperor’s New Clothes is the popular tale written by Hans Christian Anderson.

Set to the music of Mozart, this classic fable depicts the pitfalls of vanity and greed.  Two weavers promise an Emperor a new suit of clothes invisible to those unfit for their positions or incompetent. When the Emperor parades around before his subjects in his new clothes, a child cries out “But he isn’t wearing anything at all!”
