KENOSHA — Singing, acting and theatre skills will be developed in a summer fine arts camp for children, offered July 20-Aug. 1 by the Southeast Wisconsin Performing Arts (SEWPA). The camp is aimed at students entering first through sixth grade this fall, and includes performances with teens in the Opera ala Carte productions of “Green Eggs and Ham” and “The Fairy Queen.”

The Fine Arts Camp will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, July 20-31 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2026 22nd Ave. Children will learn to sing together, both in unison and in parts. Acting and theatre skills will be included in the program, as children learn through play and improvisation. They also will work on basic movement and dance techniques, and will help construct their costumes under the guidance of costume building instructors.

Children will combine their talents with high school and college students in performances of “Green Eggs and Ham,” on July 23, 24 and 25 and “The Fairy Queen” on July 31 and August 1.

Instructors include Artistic Director Kathryn Peperkorn, drama coach Brianna Lipor (Miss Wisconsin 2008), dance instructor Ryann Marlar (Kenosha Academy of Dance) and Dalcroze Eurythmics instructor Fumi Nishikori-Nakayama (Cardinal Stritch University).

Registration is open until capacity is filled at fifty students. Registration may be completed by downloading the form online and mailing it in with the deposit.

There are participant meetings on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. and May 9 at 4:00 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, students and parents should attend one. At these meetings student swill be measured for costumes, and have a voice screening, as well as find out more information about the summer.

Kenosha, WI – Thursday, March 19, 2009 – Southeast Wisconsin Performing Arts (SEWPA), a local nonprofit that supports youth arts programs, is holding a free community performance on Saturday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Reuther High School Auditorium, 913 57th Street, Kenosha, Wisconsin 53140.

The community is invited to help celebrate Opera ala Carte’s 5th anniversary season with an engaging evening, offering a selection of diverse performances, appropriate for all ages. The evening will feature dancers with the Milwaukee Ballet, singers with the Milwaukee Florentine Opera, local students in SEWPA’s Opera ala Carte program, Kenosha Academy of Dance advanced ballet students, and local favorites Greg Berg and Ami Bouterse.

There is no cost to attend this community event. Tickets are free and can be picked up at the Kenosha Academy of Dance, from 4-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling 262-551-9081, or at the door. Seating is on a first-come first-served basis.

The performance is being made possible by an anonymous donation.

SEWPA, a nonprofit association, was founded to serve southeastern Wisconsin youth through providing quality music education, performing arts experience, and audience outreach. Offering opera, dance, choral and instrumental music instruction, SEWPA gives young people (ages 5-22) the opportunity to take classes that will inspire and engage them, directed by some of the most talented professionals in the area. SEWPA runs several successful youth summer programs, including its signature program Opera ala Carte and a fine arts camp. SEWPA provides a safe and encouraging environment that gives each young performer, the skills necessary not only to become an artist, but also to become a confident young adult.
